Karaoke Dictionary

Book
The notebook of song selections. The book lists the artist, song title and song number. A good book will have at least 1.000 songs. A long-established KJ may have 7,000 or more songs in his/her book.

KJ
Karaoke Jock. Similar to a DJ (disk jockey) except that he/she plays karaoke.

Rotation
When every singer has sung one song. After one rotation, a new one begins and the singers will have another turn to sing.

Scaryoke
Can be a suicide (see below) or a song that's challenging.

SignUp Sheets
A sheet, usually on a clipboard, where you sign up for songs. You will write your name, song title and song number. Some KJs prefer sheets to slips. Most KJs will ask you to sign up for only one song at a time. After singing your song, you may sign up for another.

Slips
Small forms requesting your name, song title and song number. Some KJs use slips to sign up singers. Check to see if the KJ prefers you to turn in one slip at a time, or if he/she permits turning in multiple slips.

Suicide
A song never before performed by a singer, or a song selected for a singer by someone else. If you drag an unwilling friend on stage with you to sing a song for the first time, it's a homicide-suicide.

Karaoke Roulette
"We have a term, Karaoke Roulette, for when the KJ encourages someone to get up to sing. Usually, this happens early in the night when it's still slow and the list is short or nonexistent. Our KJ will pick out a regular and ask them to do karaoke roulette. If they agree, she'll pick a song for them that she thinks they would know/perform well. It's also for the regulars who'd like to sing something different, but don't really know what to pick." (This is from Robert Lawrence. Thanks, Rob!)

Virgin
Someone who is a first-time karaoke singer.
